THE UNCANNY(1)

ABSTRACT: The paper reviews the references about the studies
done by S.Freud, S.Kofman and J.Bleger over the short story
written by E.T.A.Hoffman, named "The Sandman",
where those authors find a psychoanalytic perspective to think
over issues around castration, compulsion to repetition, death
impulse, narcisism and the double, that are here brought together
with the help of ideas developed by W.Bion and M.Klein about
the condition to symbolize and think.

paper was written in 1983, during the specialization course
in Psychoanalysis, at the Instituto Sedes Sapientiae, and
was originally oriented by Prof.Regina Schnaidermann, who
first suggested that I wrote about this topic, referred -
and loaned me - the article by Sarah Kofman. I should add
a 'warning': as this was the first longer paper I had ever
written about subjects specifically within Psychoanalysis,
it does lack a certain kind of academic organization, which
could perhaps be compensated for by the interest that ideas
from the articles mentioned above may hold around the 'uncanny'.
